Indications for Use

PRIMED Chemotherapy Drug Tested Gowns are non-sterile, single-use isolation gowns intended to be worn by healthcare personnel to protect both the patient and the wearer from the transfer of microorganisms, body fluids, and particulate material. In addition, these gowns provide protection against chemotherapy drugs. The listed chemotherapy drugs showed no breakthrough within 480 minutes at a standardized breakthrough rate of 0.1 μg/cm²/minute when tested in accordance with ASTM F739:2020 standard.

Device Story

Non-sterile, single-use isolation gowns; worn by healthcare personnel in non-surgical settings; provide barrier protection against microorganisms, body fluids, and particulates; tested for permeation resistance against specific chemotherapy drugs (e.g., Carmustine, Cisplatin, Doxorubicin) per ASTM F739:2020; no breakthrough observed within 480 minutes; available in AAMI Level 2 and Level 3 barrier protection; design features include full back, knit cuffs, hook-and-loop neck closure, and ultrasonically welded seams; protects both patient and wearer; supports safe handling and administration of chemotherapy agents.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical testing was performed. Evidence is based on non-clinical bench testing, including AATCC 42 (impact penetration), AATCC 127 (hydrostatic pressure), ASTM D5034 (tensile strength), ASTM D1683 (seam strength), ASTM D5587 (tear resistance), ISO 10993-5/10/23 (biocompatibility), 16 CFR 1610 (flammability), and ASTM F739:2020 (chemotherapy drug permeation).

Technological Characteristics

Laminated non-woven material; AAMI Level 2 (PM4-99450) and Level 3 (PM4-99460) barrier performance; ultrasonically welded seams; knit cuffs; hook-and-loop neck closure; non-sterile; single-use; tested per ASTM F739:2020 for chemotherapy permeation; biocompatible per ISO 10993; Class 1 flammability per 16 CFR 1610.

Indications for Use

Indicated for adult healthcare personnel in non-surgical settings to protect against microorganisms, body fluids, particulate material, and specific chemotherapy drugs.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

Surgical apparel are devices that are intended to be worn by operating room personnel during surgical procedures to protect both the surgical patient and the operating room personnel from transfer of microorganisms, body fluids, and particulate material. Examples include surgical caps, hoods, masks, gowns, operating room shoes and shoe covers, and isolation masks and gowns. Surgical suits and dresses, commonly known as scrub suits, are excluded.

Special Controls

*Classification.* (1) Class II (special controls) for surgical gowns and surgical masks. A surgical N95 respirator or N95 filtering facepiece respirator is not exempt if it is intended to prevent specific diseases or infections, or it is labeled or otherwise represented as filtering surgical smoke or plumes, filtering specific amounts of viruses or bacteria, reducing the amount of and/or killing viruses, bacteria, or fungi, or affecting allergenicity, or it contains coating technologies unrelated to filtration (e.g., to reduce and or kill microorganisms). Surgical N95 respirators and N95 filtering facepiece respirators are exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to § 878.9, and the following conditions for exemption:(i) The user contacting components of the device must be demonstrated to be biocompatible. (ii) Analysis and nonclinical testing must: (A) Characterize flammability and be demonstrated to be appropriate for the intended environment of use; and (B) Demonstrate the ability of the device to resist penetration by fluids, such as blood and body fluids, at a velocity consistent with the intended use of the device. (iii) NIOSH approved under its regulation. (2) Class I (general controls) for surgical apparel other than surgical gowns and surgical masks. The class I device is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to § 878.9.

You may, therefore, market the device, subject to the general controls provisions of the Act. Although this letter refers to your product as a device, please be aware that some cleared products may instead be combination products. The 510(k) Premarket Notification Database available at https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfpmn/pmn.cfm identifies combination product submissions. The general controls provisions of the Act include requirements for annual registration, listing of devices, good manufacturing practice, labeling, and prohibitions against misbranding and adulteration. Please note: CDRH does not evaluate information related to contract liability warranties. We remind you, however, that device labeling must be truthful and not misleading. If your device is classified (see above) into either class II (Special Controls) or class III (PMA), it may be subject to additional controls. The predicate devices are AAMI level 2 surgical gowns classified under product code FYA and the reference device is an AAMI level 3 chemotherapy drug tested surgical gown. Although the intended use environments differ all devices are intended to provide barrier protection against the transfer of microorganisms, body fluids and particulate matter for healthcare personnel. The proposed device has also been evaluated for chemotherapy drug permeation resistance to support the additional chemotherapy claim. The difference between the proposed and predicate/ reference devices relates to the clinical use environment rather than fundamental technology or mechanism of action and does not raise new questions of safety or effectiveness. 2.7 The predicate device does not include a chemotherapy drug protection claim, whereas both the proposed and reference devices have been evaluated for permeation and breakthrough resistance against the claimed chemotherapy drugs in accordance with ASTM F739:2020. The results showed no standardized breakthrough for up to 480 minutes for the listed drugs and the devices are safe and effective for its intended use. 3 Different - The predicate and reference devices are supplied sterile or non-sterile (intended to be sterilized prior to use), whereas the proposed device is provided non-sterile and is intended for use in a non-sterile isolation environment where sterility is not required. The intended use of both the predicate and proposed devices is to protect both the patient and the wearer from transfer of microorganisms, body fluids, and particulate material and both have been evaluated for permeation and breakthrough resistance against various chemotherapy drugs. The fact that the proposed device is provided non-sterile and intended for use in a non-sterile, isolation setting does not adversely affect its safety and performance. 4 Different - The proposed device has undergone biocompatibility, performance and chemotherapy drug resistance testing and has been demonstrated to be safe and effective for its intended use. The difference in raw material type does not raise new questions of safety or effectiveness. 5 Different - The difference in colour does not impact the safety or performance of the device. Testing reports confirm that the proposed gown is safe for its intended use. 6 Different - The proposed device includes both AAMI level 2 and 3 gowns, while the predicate device is an AAMI level 2 gown. Each proposed model has been independently tested and demonstrated to meet the applicable AAMI PB70 performance requirements for its barrier level. The differences in barrier level have been reflected in the labelling and do not raise new question of safety or effectiveness. Page 5 of 7 {9} PRIMED Chemotherapy Drug Tested Gowns (K261811) 510(K) Summary # Overall Performance Conclusions: The PRIMED Chemotherapy Drug Tested gowns have been tested for permeation and breakthrough resistance against various types of chemotherapy drugs in accordance with ASTM F739-2020. In addition, this gown has been tested for barrier protection according to ANSI/AAMI PB70:2022 requirements. The testing results demonstrate that the PRIMED Chemotherapy Drug Tested gowns meet the claimed barrier protection requirements as defined by ANSI/AAMI PB70:2022 and were tested for permeation of the listed chemotherapy drugs.
