Device Story

MicroScan® Dried MIC/Combo Panels determine antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria to Cefdinir. Panels contain dried antimicrobial agent; inoculated with bacterial samples using Turbidity or Prompt methods. Panels processed via autoScan-4® or WalkAway® instruments. System measures bacterial growth inhibition to determine Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). Used in clinical laboratories by technicians/microbiologists to guide antibiotic therapy decisions. Provides quantitative susceptibility data to assist clinicians in selecting appropriate antimicrobial treatment for patients with bacterial infections.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. External evaluations compared dried Cefdinir panels against NCCLS frozen reference panels using fresh/stock efficacy isolates and stock challenge strains. Gram-negative Essential Agreement: 97.9%. Gram-positive Essential Agreement: 94.0%. Reproducibility and precision testing performed using Turbidity and Prompt inoculum methods on autoScan-4® and WalkAway® instruments. Quality control performance acceptable.

Dried microdilution MIC/Combo panels containing Cefdinir (0.015 - 8 mcg/ml). Compatible with autoScan-4® and WalkAway® automated instruments. Supports Turbidity and Prompt inoculum methods.

Indications for Use

Indicated for determining susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus (including methicillin-susceptible, β-lactamase producing strains) and Streptococcus pyogenes to Cefdinir. Cefdinir is inactive against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus. Secondary organisms with in vitro data include Citrobacter (diversus) koseri, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Staphylococcus epidermidis (methicillin-susceptible), and Streptococcus agalactiae; safety/effectiveness for these not established.

The Premarket Notification (510[k]) presents data in support of the new antimicrobial, Cefdinir, for the MicroScan® Dried Gram-Negative and Gram-Positive MIC/Combo Panels. Both the gram-negative and gram-positive external evaluations were conducted with fresh and stock Efficacy isolates and stock Challenge strains. The external evaluations were designed to confirm the acceptability of the proposed Dried Cefdinir panels by comparing their performance with an NCCLS frozen Cefdinir Reference panel. The Dried gram-negative Cefdinir panel demonstrated acceptable performance with an overall Essential Agreement of 97.9% when compared with the frozen Cefdinir Reference panel. The Dried gram-positive Cefdinir panel demonstrated acceptable performance with an overall Essential Agreement of 94.0% when compared with the frozen Cefdinir Reference panel. Inoculum and instrument reproducibility testing was conducted; both the gram-negative and the gram-positive Dried Cefdinir panels demonstrated acceptable reproducibility and precision, regardless of which inoculum method (i.e., Turbidity and Prompt), or instrument (autoScan-4® and WalkAway®) was used. Quality Control performance was acceptable for both the gram-negative and the grampositive Dried Cefdinir panels.
