Indications for Use

The Arthrex Beaming System is intended to be used in the stabilization, reconstruction, and fixation of bone fractures, fusions, osteotomies, and non-unions in the foot and ankle.

Device Story

Arthrex Beaming System; metallic bone fixation fastener system; used for stabilization, reconstruction, and fixation of foot and ankle bone fractures, fusions, osteotomies, and non-unions. Device consists of cannulated or solid stainless steel beams (5-8mm diameter; 50-170mm length). Operated by surgeons in clinical settings. Provides mechanical fixation to bone; supports healing process. Subject device features modified solid tip design compared to predicate. Performance validated via failure torque testing using anatomically representative polyurethane foam substrates (15 and 20 pcf) to simulate metatarsal/cuneiform and navicular/talus regions. Engineering assessment confirms tip modification does not adversely affect mechanical performance. MRI compatibility profile remains consistent with predicate.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. No clinical data. Performance validated via failure torque testing using 15 and 20 pcf polyurethane foam blocks to represent specific foot/ankle anatomy. Testing followed ASTM F543 methods, evaluating failure torque, failure torque to insertion torque ratio, and failure torque to removal torque ratio.

Technological Characteristics

Material: 316L Stainless Steel (ASTM F138). Form factor: Cannulated or solid beams (5-8mm diameter; 50-170mm length). Sterilization: Gamma (single-use) or end-user sterilization. Mechanical fixation principle. No software or active energy source.

Indications for Use

Indicated for adult patients requiring stabilization, reconstruction, and fixation of bone fractures, fusions, osteotomies, and non-unions in the foot and ankle.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A smooth or threaded metallic bone fixation fastener is a device intended to be implanted that consists of a stiff wire segment or rod made of alloys, such as cobalt-chromium-molybdenum and stainless steel, and that may be smooth on the outside, fully or partially threaded, straight or U-shaped; and may be either blunt pointed, sharp pointed, or have a formed, slotted head on the end. It may be used for fixation of bone fractures, for bone reconstructions, as a guide pin for insertion of other implants, or it may be implanted through the skin so that a pulling force (traction) may be applied to the skeletal system.

The Beams range from 5 mm to 8 mm in diameter and from 50 mm to 170 mm in length. The Arthrex Beaming System consist of single-use, Gamma sterilized devices packaged in a double PETG blister tray with Tyvek lidding and non-sterile devices intended for end-user sterilization packaged in a polyethylene bag. | | Indications for Use | The Arthrex Beaming System is intended to be used in the stabilization, reconstruction, and fixation of bone fractures, fusions, osteotomies, and non-unions in the foot and ankle. | | Technological Comparison | Intended Use Comparison Section: Compared to the predicate device, the proposed Arthrex Beaming System remains unchanged with respect to its intended use/indications for use. Technological Comparison Section: Compared to the predicate device, the proposed Arthrex Beaming System remains unchanged with respect to its | {5} K262975 Page 2 of 3 | | basic design features (except for the solid tip design), sizes, fundamental scientific technology, packaging configuration, sterility, shelf life, and MRI compatibility. The differences between the predicate device, Arthrex Beaming System, K254215, and the proposed Arthrex Beaming System are as follows: Since the K254215 clearance, a design change to the tip of the solid Arthrex Beams was implemented. There was no change in labeling, sterilization, packaging, material or performance. The original testing reviewed and cleared by the FDA in predicate device K254215 used a 30 pcf polyurethane foam substrate. The subject 510(k) testing uses sequential 15 and 20 pcf foam blocks to represent the metatarsal/cuneiform and navicular/talus regions, respectively. This change provides a more anatomically representative test configuration while testing the same device sizes, ASTM F543 test methods, sample sizes, failure torque testing, and failure torque to insertion torque ratio and failure torque to removal torque ratio acceptance criteria. | | --- | --- | | **Performance Data** | Arthrex conducted failure torque testing with a more clinically relevant test setup and the results demonstrated that the performance of the proposed devices are substantially equivalent to the predicate devices in a more clinically relevant situation. Additionally, based on an engineering assessment, the tip design modification was determined not to adversely affect the mechanical performance of the proposed devices compared to the predicate devices. Therefore, no additional performance testing specific to the tip design change was conducted as part of this submission. No MRI testing was performed for this submission. The modifications included in this submission do not affect the previously established MRI safety profile of the devices. | {6} **K262975** **Page 3 of 3** | | The existing MRI parameters and labeling previously cleared under the predicate device, Arthrex Beaming System (K254215), remain applicable and are supported by the previously completed MRI evaluations. | | --- | --- | | ***Conclusion*** | Based on the intended use, fundamental scientific technology, and the data provided in this Special 510(k), Arthrex has determined that the proposed Arthrex Beaming System is substantially equivalent to the predicate device Arthrex Beaming System (K254215). Any differences between the proposed and predicate devices are considered minor and do not raise different questions concerning safety and effectiveness. |
