Surface treatment: Low-pressure plasma (N2 or CO2) or atmospheric plasma. Dimensions: 13.0-18.0mm diameter, 8.0-9.0mm base curve. Oxygen permeability: 64 x 10^-11. Refractive index: 1.403. Specific gravity: 1.06.

Indications for Use

Indicated for daily wear single-use optical correction of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism (up to 3.00D) in aphakic and non-aphakic patients with disease-free eyes; includes presbyopia correction for multifocal variants.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A soft (hydrophilic) contact lens is a device intended to be worn directly against the cornea and adjacent limbal and scleral areas of the eye to correct vision conditions or act as a therapeutic bandage. The device is made of various polymer materials the main polymer molecules of which absorb or attract a certain volume (percentage) of water.

COMPARISON OF TECHNOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS WITH PREDICATE DEVICE The purpose of this 510(k) application is to add optional low-pressure plasma surface treatments with N₂ gas or with CO₂ gas in addition to the currently-510(k)-cleared atmospheric plasma. No other changes have been made; other than the surface treatment all other aspects of the Miru 1day UpSide (midafilcon A) daily disposable contact lens remain identical to the predicate device (K191872). The following matrix illustrates the intended use and other characteristics of the Miru 1day UpSide Daily Disposable Soft Contact Lens, as well as the predicate device. Table 1. PERFORMANCE DATA ~ Non-Clinical Studies ~ A series of studies were completed to demonstrate the substantial equivalence of the Miru 1day {7} Page 4 of 4 UpSide (midafilcon A) daily disposable soft contact lens to the predicate device. Bulk property testing, biocompatibility, solution compatibility, preservative uptake release, extraction testing, and stability/shelf life testing were addressed in K193399 and are applicable to the subject device. Results of non-clinical testing on the modified device are summarized below: # Biocompatibility The midafilcon A contact lens in its final finished form is identical to the Miru 1day UpSide Daily Disposable Soft Contact Lens (cleared under K193399) with regards to formulation, sterilization, and geometry, and no other chemicals have been added (e.g., plasticizers, fillers, additives, cleaning agents, mold release agents). Since the change in plasma treatment condition (atmospheric to low-pressure, change in gas with which is treated as low-pressure plasma) only affects the limited surface layer of the contact lenses, the biocompatibility tests which use extracts from the contact lenses may be referenced from the predicate device 510(k) submission for Miru 1 day UpSide (K193399). The applicable biocompatibility test that may be affected by surface condition is Cytotoxicity per ISO 10993-5. Cytotoxicity testing on the finished lenses using the direct contact method per ISO 10993-5 was conducted in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and the results confirmed the extracts are non-cytotoxic. Biocompatibility testing for the primary packaging solution and primary packaging is being leveraged from K193399 since these components are identical. # Contact Angle Testing Contact angle testing was performed on the subject device to evaluate the effect of the surface treatment. Testing was conducted according to ANSI Z80.20-2016. ~ Clinical Studies ~ Clinical studies were unnecessary for this application. # VIII. CONCLUSIONS # Substantial Equivalence Based on the results of the testing presented in this Premarket Notification, Miru 1day UpSide (midafilcon A) daily disposable soft contact lens is as safe and effective as the predicate device when used in accordance with the labeled directions for use and for the proposed indication.
