Indications for Use

Profisil® Free produces mechanical occlusion of the dentinal tubules in the treatment of tooth hypersensitivity.

Device Story

Profisil® Free is a dental varnish designed for the treatment of tooth hypersensitivity. The device consists of a mucosa-friendly dimethicone gel containing hydroxyapatite, calcium salts, and phosphate salts. It is supplied in single-dose blisters with an applicator brush. The clinician applies the varnish directly to the affected tooth surface, where it adheres for several hours. The mechanism of action involves the release of calcium and phosphate ions and the physical, mechanical occlusion of open dentinal tubules, which blocks fluid flow and reduces sensitivity. The device is intended for use by qualified dental professionals in a clinical setting. By occluding the tubules, the device provides relief from hypersensitivity caused by various stimuli.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data provided. Evidence consists of biocompatibility testing (ISO 10993-1:2025, including cytotoxicity, sensitization, irritation, material-mediated pyrogenicity, and acute systemic toxicity) and bench testing comparing the device to the predicate.

Technological Characteristics

Varnish composed of polydimethylsiloxane, hydroxyapatite, calcium salts, and phosphate salts. Non-sterile, single-dose delivery system. Adheres to tooth surface for sustained release. Biocompatibility evaluated per ISO 10993-1:2025.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients with dentinal hypersensitivity. Contraindicated in patients with ulcerative gingivitis, stomatitis, or known allergy to any product ingredients.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

Cavity varnish is a device that consists of a compound intended to coat a prepared cavity of a tooth before insertion of restorative materials. The device is intended to prevent penetration of restorative materials, such as amalgam, into the dentinal tissue.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The device, when it is an external cleaning solution, is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 872.9.

You may, therefore, market the device, subject to the general controls provisions of the Act. Although this letter refers to your product as a device, please be aware that some cleared products may instead be combination products. The 510(k) Premarket Notification Database available at https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfpmn/pmn.cfm identifies combination product submissions. The general controls provisions of the Act include requirements for annual registration, listing of devices, good manufacturing practice, labeling, and prohibitions against misbranding and adulteration. Please note: CDRH does not evaluate information related to contract liability warranties. We remind you, however, that device labeling must be truthful and not misleading. If your device is classified (see above) into either class II (Special Controls) or class III (PMA), it may be subject to additional controls. Existing major regulations affecting your device can be found in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21, Parts 800 to 898.
