Indications for Use

The Dental Barriers and Sleeves are intended to be used as a barrier to cover dental instruments. This device is non-sterile and is intended for single patient use only.

Device Story

Disposable, single-use polyethylene film sleeve; acts as physical barrier for dental instruments (intraoral cameras, curing lights, intraoral scanners, fluorescence-based caries detection devices). Used in clinical settings to prevent cross-contamination between patients. Applied by dental staff; provides protective cover during procedures. Benefits patient by reducing exposure to contaminants during dental examinations or treatments.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. No clinical studies performed. Biocompatibility testing (ISO 10993-5, -10, -23) confirmed non-cytotoxic, non-sensitizing, and non-irritating. Performance testing (ASTM F1670, F1671) confirmed resistance to synthetic blood and viral penetration. Mechanical properties (tensile strength, tear resistance, puncture resistance) verified via ASTM D882, D1004, and F1342.

Technological Characteristics

Material: 100% LLDPE polyethylene film. Form factor: Disposable sleeve. Thickness: 0.03mm. Sensing/Actuation: None (passive barrier). Energy source: None. Sterilization: Non-sterile. Standards: ASTM F1670, F1671, D882, F1342, D1004; ISO 10993-5, 10993-10, 10993-23.

Indications for Use

Indicated for use as a disposable barrier for dental instruments to reduce cross-contamination risk between patients. Applicable to adolescents (12+ years) and adults.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

A surgical drape and drape accessories is a device made of natural or synthetic materials intended to be used as a protective patient covering, such as to isolate a site of surgical incision from microbial and other contamination. The device includes a plastic wound protector that may adhere to the skin around a surgical incision or be placed in a wound to cover its exposed edges, and a latex drape with a self-retaining finger cot that is intended to allow repeated insertion of the surgeon's finger into the rectum during performance of a transurethral prostatectomy.

Special Controls

*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The device, when it is an ear, nose, and throat surgical drape, a latex sheet drape with self-retaining finger cot, a disposable urological drape, a Kelly pad, an ophthalmic patient drape, an ophthalmic microscope drape, an internal drape retention ring (wound protector), or a surgical drape that does not include an antimicrobial agent, is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to the limitations in § 878.9.
