Indications for Use

Device Story

Heartland Health Surgical Mask is a three-layer, flat-pleated, non-sterile, single-use disposable face mask. It consists of a spunbond polypropylene outer layer, a polypropylene filter layer, and a spunbond polypropylene inner layer. The device features a nose wire and elastic headband with Lycra chin elastic to maintain position on the face. It is intended for use by adults in clinical or OTC settings to reduce exposure to blood, body fluids, and particulates. The mask acts as a physical barrier to prevent the transfer of microorganisms and fluids between the wearer and the environment. Healthcare providers use the mask as part of standard infection control protocols. The device provides protection to both the patient and the wearer by filtering particulates and resisting fluid penetration.

Clinical Evidence

Bench testing only. Performance evaluated against ASTM F2100-19 Level 3 standards. Results: Fluid resistance (ASTM F1862) passed at 160mmHg; Particulate Filtration Efficiency (ASTM F2299) >98%; Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (ASTM F2101) >98%; Differential Pressure (EN 14683) < 6.0mmH2O/cm²; Flammability (16 CFR 1610) Class 1. Biocompatibility testing (ISO 10993-5, ISO 10993-10) confirmed the device is non-cytotoxic, non-sensitizing, and non-irritating.

Technological Characteristics

Three-layer flat-pleated design. Materials: Polypropylene spunbond (outer/inner), polypropylene (middle). Nose piece: Polyethylene and soft annealed carbon steel. Headband: Spunbond polypropylene, spandex. Chin elastic: Lycra. Performance: ASTM F2100-19 Level 3. Biocompatibility: ISO 10993-5 (cytotoxicity), ISO 10993-10 (irritation). Non-sterile, single-use.

Indications for Use

Indicated for use by adults as a single-use, disposable surgical mask to protect patients and healthcare personnel from microorganisms, body fluids, and particulate material in infection control practices.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

Surgical apparel are devices that are intended to be worn by operating room personnel during surgical procedures to protect both the surgical patient and the operating room personnel from transfer of microorganisms, body fluids, and particulate material. Examples include surgical caps, hoods, masks, gowns, operating room shoes and shoe covers, and isolation masks and gowns. Surgical suits and dresses, commonly known as scrub suits, are excluded.

Special Controls

*Classification.* (1) Class II (special controls) for surgical gowns and surgical masks. A surgical N95 respirator or N95 filtering facepiece respirator is not exempt if it is intended to prevent specific diseases or infections, or it is labeled or otherwise represented as filtering surgical smoke or plumes, filtering specific amounts of viruses or bacteria, reducing the amount of and/or killing viruses, bacteria, or fungi, or affecting allergenicity, or it contains coating technologies unrelated to filtration (e.g., to reduce and or kill microorganisms). Surgical N95 respirators and N95 filtering facepiece respirators are exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to § 878.9, and the following conditions for exemption:(i) The user contacting components of the device must be demonstrated to be biocompatible. (ii) Analysis and nonclinical testing must: (A) Characterize flammability and be demonstrated to be appropriate for the intended environment of use; and (B) Demonstrate the ability of the device to resist penetration by fluids, such as blood and body fluids, at a velocity consistent with the intended use of the device. (iii) NIOSH approved under its regulation. (2) Class I (general controls) for surgical apparel other than surgical gowns and surgical masks. The class I device is exempt from the premarket notification procedures in subpart E of part 807 of this chapter subject to § 878.9.
