Device Story
NuStat is a hemostatic wound dressing composed of 65% continuous filament silica and 35% bamboo cellulose rayon fibers, incorporating a radiopaque thread for X-ray detection. Used in clinical settings by healthcare providers, the device is applied to bleeding sites (internal organ spaces, surgical wounds, traumatic injuries). Its principle of operation is physical: the cellulose component absorbs excess fluid, facilitating the physical aggregation of blood cells and clotting factors at the application site. The silica fibers further influence the coagulation cascade via contact activation. The dressing provides temporary hemostasis, aiding in the management of severe bleeding. It is provided sterile in various sizes and configurations (foil, Tyvek, or LDPE pouches). The device is intended for prescription use.
Clinical Evidence
No human clinical data. Evidence includes bench testing and GLP animal studies (pig liver resection model). Hemostasis achieved within 3 minutes. Radiographic visualization confirmed at placement and 48 hours. No evidence of vascular obstruction, embolization, or infection. Biocompatibility testing per ISO 10993 (cytotoxicity, sensitization, irritation, systemic toxicity, pyrogenicity, genotoxicity) showed no adverse findings. In-vitro clot assessment (PT/aPTT) showed accelerated clotting. Particulate release was substantially equivalent to the predicate.
Technological Characteristics
Hemostatic gauze composed of 65% silica fiber and 35% bamboo cellulose rayon fiber. Includes radiopaque thread (PP-BaSO4). Dimensions range from 2"x2" to 12"x12". Sterilized via gamma radiation. Mechanism: physical fluid absorption and contact activation of the coagulation cascade. Biocompatibility per ISO 10993. Packaging: Tyvek or LDPE pouches.
Indications for Use
Indicated for patients with class III or class IV bleeding requiring temporary control of internal organ space bleeding, and for control of severely bleeding wounds and traumatic injuries.

Identification
A non-absorbable, hemostatic gauze for temporary internal use is a prescription device intended to be placed temporarily for control of severely bleeding wounds such as surgical wounds and traumatic injuries. The gauze is coated or impregnated with a hemostatic material which may enhance hemostasis by physical means. The device is intended to be removed once the patient is stabilized.
Special Controls
*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The special controls for this device are:(1) Animal performance testing must demonstrate that the device performs as intended under anticipated conditions of use. Specifically testing must:
(i) Demonstrate that the device is able to achieve hemostasis;
(ii) Demonstrate that the device can be radiographically detected; and
(iii) Assess pertinent safety endpoints including vascular obstruction and adhesion formation.
(2) The device must be demonstrated to be biocompatible.
(3) Non-clinical performance data must demonstrate that the device performs as intended under anticipated conditions of use. The following tests must be performed:
(i) In vitro clot assessment;
(ii) Particulate release testing;
(iii) Physical characterization, including swelling percent and particulate size;
(iv) Chemical characterization;
(v) Radiopacity testing; and
(vi) Mechanical integrity testing, including tensile strength and tear strength.
(4) Performance data must demonstrate the sterility of the device.
(5) Performance data must support the shelf life of the device by demonstrating continued sterility, package integrity, and device functionality over the identified shelf life.
(6) Labeling must include the following:
(i) Instructions for use, including an instruction to remove all visible device components by irrigation;
(ii) The maximum amount of time the device may be left within the body;
(iii) A shelf life;
(iv) A contraindication for intravascular use of the device; and
(v) A warning regarding the potential for adhesion formation.
In combination with the general controls of the FD&C Act, the non-absorbable, hemostatic gauze for temporary internal use is subject to the following special controls:

3. Judging fuzzy relevance
Fuzzy results trail off in relevance as you scroll. Use three signals to decide how far down to go: the fuzzy badge explanations, the intended use column, and whether your target output (e.g., Cobb angle) still appears in the AI Performance sub-table. Once it stops appearing, you're past the relevant zone. A top hit with a low score (~0.4) and a stretched explanation is a hint the closest predicates are far away — the project may be headed for De Novo. Note the fuzzy search is a pattern match: it doesn't handle negation ("not") well, and hardware devices can appear — filter by SaMD/AI ML to cut them.

4. Device detail page: chat and citations

5. Side-by-side comparison
Select multiple rows in the results table (aim for under ~10), then open the PDF Viewer tab. Ask one question — it goes to all selected devices in parallel, each with citations. This is the fastest way to compare and contrast devices: training data, PCCP scope, how they handled adding new scanners, and so on.

6. Collections

7. Product codes and the regulations tree
Click a product code in the results to jump to it in the regulations tree — identification text, sibling product codes, and devices you can open in a PDF viewer on the right. Click a regulation number to see its identification, special controls, and related product codes. You can also search by product code or regulation number at the top of the tree. Always read the special controls if any exist for your device — it broadens your search and sharpens pre-kickoff research.

8. Chart view
Click Show Chart and segment by regulation number (or product code) to see which regulations dominate your result set. Clicking a regulation takes you into the regulations tree. Great for spotting that most matches are, say, hardware laparoscopic devices — a cue to go back and filter.

9. The predicate graph
Open the Predicates tab for a family-tree view of predicate relationships. Click a node to trace its parents and children; selections from search carry over pre-selected. 10. Embeddings: the galaxy map
The Embeddings tab plots every matching document in a 2-D "galaxy map" where semantically similar devices cluster together. Hover or click clusters to explore, and let AI label the clusters for you. Embeddings beat product codes for grouping: two devices can carry different product codes (LLZ vs. QIH) yet do the same thing — the embedding captures the meaning of the intended use and device story. This is also exactly how retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) works under the hood, and it makes a great visual on client calls.
