Indications for Use
M-Vu Breast Density is a software application intended for use with digital mammography systems. M-Vu Breast Density calculates breast density as a ratio of fibroglandular tissue and total breast area estimates. M-Vu Breast Density provides these numerical values for each breast as well as a density category to aid radiologists in the assessment of breast tissue composition. M-Vu Breast Density produces adjunctive information. It is not an interpretive or diagnostic aid.
Device Story
M-Vu Breast Density is a stand-alone software application for digital mammography systems. It takes DICOM digital mammography images as input and automatically calculates the dense tissue area and total breast area for each breast. It outputs the breast area (cm2), dense area (cm2), percent breast density, and a BI-RADS density category (1-4). The device is used by radiologists in clinical settings to provide adjunctive information for assessing breast tissue composition; it is not an interpretive or diagnostic aid. The software is designed to process 60-120 cases per hour and displays results on a mammography workstation, high-resolution monitor, or in a printed report. It is intended to assist the clinician in evaluating breast density, which may inform clinical decision-making regarding patient screening or follow-up.
Clinical Evidence
No clinical studies were performed. Non-clinical validation included: comparison of M-Vu BI-RADS scores against 13 expert radiologists (weighted Kappa statistic); verification of fibroglandular tissue estimates; correlation of density results with patient age (Spearman Rank Correlation); and reproducibility testing comparing left/right breast density and longitudinal images (Pearson's Correlation Coefficient).
