Indications for Use
VITEK® 2 AST Streptococcus Vancomycin is designed for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Streptococcus species. VITEK® 2 AST Streptococcus Vancomycin is a quantitative test intended for use with the VITEK® 2 and ViTEK® 2 Compact Systems as a laboratory aid in th determination of in vitro susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. Vancomycin has been shown to be active against most strains of the microorganisms listed below, according to the FDA label for this antimicrobial. Active in vitro and in clinical infections Viridans group streptococci In vitro data are available, but their clinical significance is unknown Streptococcus agalactiae Streptococcus pyogenes. The VITEK® 2 Antimicrobial Susceptibility Test (AST) is intended to be used with the VITEK® 2 The VT LN 27 kitimilloredial outdative or qualitative susceptibility testing of isolated colonies for the most clinically significant aerobic gram-negative bacilli, Staphylococcus spp., Enterococcus spp., Streptococcus spp. and clinically significant yeast.
Device Story
VITEK 2 AST Streptococcus Vancomycin card; miniaturized, automated version of doubling dilution technique. Input: bacterial isolate diluted in saline. Process: card rehydrated with isolate; VITEK 2 system monitors growth in 64 micro-wells via transmittance optics (visible light) over 4-16 hours. Algorithm: growth-based threshold calculation; discriminant analysis determines MIC. Output: MIC value (0.125–8 µg/mL) and SIR interpretation. Used in clinical laboratories; operated by technicians. Benefits: automated, rapid determination of in vitro susceptibility to assist clinical decision-making.
Clinical Evidence
External evaluation conducted using fresh clinical isolates and stock challenge strains. Performance compared against CLSI broth microdilution reference method. Results demonstrated 100% overall Category Agreement. Reproducibility and Quality Control testing performed on VITEK 2 and VITEK 2 Compact platforms showed acceptable results.
Technological Characteristics
Miniaturized 64-well test card; microdilution MIC technique. Sensing: visible light transmittance optics. Connectivity: VITEK 2/VITEK 2 Compact systems. Software: growth-based algorithm using discriminant analysis. Sterilization: not specified.
Indications for Use
Indicated for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Streptococcus species (Viridans group, S. agalactiae, S. pyogenes) using isolated colonies. For professional laboratory use only.
Regulatory Classification
Identification
A fully automated short-term incubation cycle antimicrobial susceptibility system is a device that incorporates concentrations of antimicrobial agents into a system for the purpose of determining in vitro susceptibility of bacterial pathogens isolated from clinical specimens. Test results obtained from short-term (less than 16 hours) incubation are used to determine the antimicrobial agent of choice to treat bacterial diseases.
Special Controls
*Classification.* Class II (special controls). The special control for this device is FDA's guidance document entitled “Class II Special Controls Guidance Document: Antimicrobial Susceptibility Test (AST) Systems; Guidance for Industry and FDA.”
