Indications for Use
SAFIRE is a CT reconstruction software. The end user can choose to apply either SAFIRE or the weighted filter back-projection (WFBP) to the acquired raw data. Depending on the clinical task, patient size, anatomical location, and clinical practice, the use of SAFIRE can help to reduce radiation dose while maintaining Pixel noise, low contrast detectability and high contrast resolution. Phantom measurements showed that high contrast resolution and pixel noise are equivalent between full dose WFBP images and reduced dose SAFIRE images. Additionally, SAFIRE can reduce spiral artifacts by using iterations going back and forth between image space and raw data space. A Model Observer evaluation showed that equivalent low contrast detectability can be achieved with 54% to 60% less dose using SAFIRE at highest noise reduction strength for thin (0.6 mm) reconstruction slices in simulated body and head phantoms for low contrast objects with different contrasts. Images reconstructed with SAFIRE are not intended to be evaluated with syngo Osteo CT or syngo Calcium Scoring.
Device Story
SAFIRE is a software-based iterative reconstruction option for Siemens SOMARIS/7 CT operating systems; processes raw CT data to improve image quality and reduce radiation dose. Operates by performing iterative cycles between image space and raw data space to validate current images against measured raw data and reconstruct differences; reduces spiral artifacts. Used in clinical settings by radiologists and technologists; output is a reconstructed CT image. Enables lower radiation dose (up to 60%) while maintaining equivalent pixel noise and spatial resolution compared to standard weighted filtered back-projection (WFBP). Benefits patients by reducing ionizing radiation exposure during diagnostic imaging.
Clinical Evidence
Bench testing and clinical environment evaluation. Phantom measurements demonstrated equivalent high-contrast resolution and pixel noise between full-dose WFBP and reduced-dose SAFIRE images. Model Observer evaluation showed equivalent low-contrast detectability with 54-60% dose reduction at highest noise reduction strength for 0.6 mm slices. Clinical environment evaluation confirmed that using up to 60% less radiation dose with SAFIRE provides images with equivalent pixel noise and spatial resolution to standard techniques. Spiral artifact reduction validated via simulations and clinical images.
Technological Characteristics
Software-based iterative reconstruction module for SOMARIS/7 CT operating system. Utilizes iterative loops between image space and raw data space. Compatible with existing CT hardware. No specific materials or energy sources as it is a software-only option. Connectivity via integration into the CT system's reconstruction pipeline.
Indications for Use
Indicated for use as a CT reconstruction software option for patients undergoing CT examinations. Used by healthcare professionals to facilitate radiation dose reduction while maintaining image quality (pixel noise, low contrast detectability, high contrast resolution). Not intended for use with syngo Osteo CT or syngo Calcium Scoring applications.

Identification
A computed tomography x-ray system is a diagnostic x-ray system intended to produce cross-sectional images of the body by computer reconstruction of x-ray transmission data from the same axial plane taken at different angles. This generic type of device may include signal analysis and display equipment, patient and equipment supports, component parts, and accessories.
