Indications for Use

The GORE SEAMGUARD® Staple Line Reinforcement Material for circular staplers is indicated for use in surgical procedures in which a soft tissue anastomosis with staple line reinforcement is needed. GORE SEAMGUARD® Bioabsorbable Staple Line Reinforcement Material can be used for reinforcement of staple lines during bariatric, colon, colorectal, gastric, and small bowel procedures.

Device Story

GORE SEAMGUARD is a bioabsorbable material used to reinforce staple lines during soft tissue anastomosis. This modification adds a polymer introducer sleeve as an accessory to the existing device. The sleeve facilitates delivery of the reinforcement material through the abdominal wall to bariatric anastomotic sites during laparoscopic procedures. The device is used by surgeons in an operating room setting. The reinforcement material remains at the surgical site to provide support; the introducer sleeve is a tool used only during the delivery process. No changes were made to the core reinforcement material or its clinical function compared to the predicate.

Clinical Evidence

No clinical data provided. Substantial equivalence is based on design and performance assessments demonstrating that the addition of the introducer sleeve does not impact the safety or effectiveness of the device.

Technological Characteristics

Bioabsorbable staple line reinforcement material. Modification includes an optional polymer introducer sleeve. No changes to materials or energy sources. Device is non-electronic, non-software, and non-active.

Indications for Use

Indicated for patients undergoing surgical procedures requiring soft tissue anastomosis with staple line reinforcement, specifically bariatric, colon, colorectal, gastric, and small bowel procedures.

Regulatory Classification

Identification

Surgical mesh is a metallic or polymeric screen intended to be implanted to reinforce soft tissue or bone where weakness exists. Examples of surgical mesh are metallic and polymeric mesh for hernia repair, and acetabular and cement restrictor mesh used during orthopedic surgery.
